The late filmmaker Yash Chopra who directed Sridevi in two major films with her in memorable roles, Chandini and Lamhe called her an acting computer, the other filmmakers who could never stop singing her praises were Mukul S Anand who made Khuda Gawah with Amitabh Bachchan as her leading man and the three great directors from the south, K Raghavendra Rao who she considers her mentor K Vishwanath and K Bhagyaraj. There are many other directors who have worked with her in films made in five different languages Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi and even English Vinglish. And every director has been inspired and literally forced to accept her as one of the best actresses in the last hundred years. She has been an amazing achiever, almost bordering on the miraculous, which is why we are honouring her with this editorial which we have done in extremely few cases.

For the record, Sridevi who started her career as a child artist when she was only four years old will be completing fifty years in films this year, in these fifty years she has worked in three hundred films, reaching that landmark with Mom, her upcoming film produced by her husband, Boney Kapoor. The wide variety of roles she has played during the long span of her career, the passion for perfection she has displayed in even the most insignificant films she has done and her extraordinary ability to bring alive any kind of character of any kind of shade and the ease with which she slips in and out of the most difficult to play roles is all only a part of the many reasons that have made her the actress par excellence that she is. The actress who is a part of every household in a country where it is difficult for any actor to find a place in a few lakhs of hearts.

Sridevi started off as Baby Sridevi in several films made in the South Indian languages and her roles as the baby are still remembered by audiences of different generations. Her first film as a leading lady in Hindi film was Solvaa Saawan which was considered to be an art film with Amol Palekar as her hero. The film failed to make any impact, which sent Sridevi back to the south. But it was difficult to keep a born actress down for long and when she made a striking comeback in Hindi films with Himmatwala, it was the beginning of an era dominated by Sridevi and nobody else. She established herself with a series of masala hits like Mawaali, Maqsad, Tohfa and Justice Chaudhry, among others but before critics and others know-alls could brand or typecast her as a masala film heroine she, stunned audiences all over with her outstanding performances in Mr India, Sadma, Laadla, Chandni, Lamhe, Chaalbaaz(in which she played her first double role with Rajnikanth and Sunny Deol as her heroes) and the number of roles which made films special because of her are too many to be enumerated here.

It was while she was at the very top of her career and had left some of the other leading ladies way behind, heroines like Madhuri Dixit, Juhi Chawla, Manisha Koirala and her own colleague from the south Jayaprada, she was forced by unknown and unforeseen circumstances in her personal life that led her to take a fifteen year break and there were millions of her fans who missed her and her mesmerizing performances.

But, like she had done in the past, she again struck back, this time with an entirely different class of film called English Vinglish. There were no two opinions among any class of film viewers that there was no second to Sridevi and that she still stood tall even after that long break - so much in common with Amitabh Bachchan who also came back with a bang after the self-sabbatical he had taken in the nineties .

Sridevis life took a turn for the better when she gave all the importance to her family life. She had what many called a controversial marriage with producer Boney Kapoor , but she was never so happy even when she was the single most successful actress of the country. The couple have had two daughters, Jhanvi and Khushi and the industry is all agog and excited about Jhanvi making her debut in films and the chances of Khushi doing the same.

The biggest test for the once in a way actress is her 300th film, Mom which is due for release. The way in which the mother of two grownup daughters has been going about the promos of the film speak volumes for her never say die attitude and approach to her career which is so much an essential part of her life.

Will Mom be the beginning of a new beginning for the wonder woman who has had several new beginnings in her fifty year old career? That is the million and more dollar question that is being asked and whose answers only one person knows- and she is Mrs Sridevi Kapoor.
