My film “Rangeela Raja” is stuck in politics – Pahlaj Nihlani

Pahlaj Nihlani whose upcoming film “Rangeela Raja” is stuck in the politics due to jealousy of few people is very much sure that he will get the much needed relief from the FCAT and it will release very soon. He in a conversation with Bollywood & TV Reporter talks in detail about his battle to release his film.
Tell us why your film “Rangeela Raja” is not getting release?
My film Rangeela Raja has been ordered 19 cuts by the Central Board of Film Certification. The film has no vulgarity. I asked for U/A certification but they offered me “A” certification which I think is a politically motivated step against me. During my tenure I followed the bye-laws which was not been followed earlier. It was me who brought the transparency and removed corruption which was being done by agent, brokers which I removed from CBFC during my reign. I have approached the High Court to give me relief and they have asked the FCAT to look after it. I am hopeful that the film will soon be releasing with very less cuts and U/A certificate.
You said that the present minister for I&B ministry Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore and Prasoon Joshi CBFC chairperson is against you and they are not allowing your film to release?
My film would have released on 16th November, 2018 itself but it didn’t happened because CBFC chief Prasoon Joshi and also minister for I&B ministry Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore didn’t have anything but personal vendetta against me and the reason they are just trying to harass me but I am not a person who easily lose the battle. I know that Prasoon Joshi is biased and everyone know’s about his enduring friendship with Aamir Khan and the reason “Thugs of Hindostan” was given an all clear censor certification out of turn, even 2.0 film which released on 29th November,2018 was been opposed by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) but the film released because both the star of the film that is Rajinikanth and Akshay Kumar are politically connected and therefore the movie was released just with a disclaimer and even the film which was produced in Chennai was censored here in Mumbai. One more example I can give you is of movie “Sanju” where there was derogatory dialogue like I was involved with 308 girls in my life, drinking, drugs addiction was been given U/A certification because the CBFC chief thought that the movie will be fit for the family audience. Another example is here Hindi movie “#MeToo” was sent to Chennai for reviewing whereas it’s reported there were five board members available, while in my film that is “Rangeela Raja” which was submitted well in time 60 days ahead of release has been slapped with multiple cuts which I can’t accept. I know that both Rajyvardhan Singh Rathorand Prasoon Joshi have decided that they will not let me release my film easily.

CBFC think that your movie has lots of vulgarity and double meaning dialogues and the reason they took the harsh decision?
All the allegations are wrong. In my film there is no vulgarity and also no double meaning dialogues. But the CBFC board asked to delete a massive number of dialogues and scenes. In one sequence my heroine asks my hero what he’d like as guru dakshina. He says Eklavya cut his thumb and gave it to his guru, to which she tells the hero he can cut her lips. There is no kiss. Only a suggestion of a kiss. Still I’ve been asked to cut out this harmless playful scene. Why? Movies like Anurag Kashyap’s Manmarziyaan are filled with kissing and lovemaking scenes and yet passed with a ‘UA’ so it is understood that they just want to harass me and nothing else. On one hand I have made more than 39 films while Prasoon Joshi has not even written the lyrics of even 20 films. The examining committee from the High Court examined my film but they too supported the CBFC and finally they have referred it to FCAT Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT) to expeditiously hear a petition filed by challenging the Censor Board’s suggestion to make around “20 cuts” in my upcoming film “Rangeela Raja”. I am not a kid I have been the chief earlier of CBFC and know all the laws so they can’t fool me. My most of the film are entertaining and family oriented be it Aankhen, Shola Aur Shabnam, Ilzaam etc.
Give us idea about what your film is all about?
My film “Rangeela Raja” is all about the style and aura of the person. I use to be impress by the way Vijay Mallaya use to style and live a king size life and thought of bringing his persona on the celluloid. Govinda is playing double role in this film one is Rangeela and the other one is Raja. The other role is of simplicity, Raja’s character is inspired by Baba Ramdev. And for the role of such a huge personality I was looking for a matured and talented actor who can suit such a personality in timing and performance and who could be better than Govinda. I think none and we both have worked together and delivered remarkable, memorable films together for the audience. For female lead we were looking for new girl as we have introduced many talents in past as like Neelam, Divya Bharti, Ritu Shivpuri, Rajeshwari etc. When we met Mishika Chourasia for this role we gave her a dialogue of three minutes which she delivered us in one take and I was very impressed by her talent as well as personality. Apart from Govinda we also have Shakti Kapoor, Digangana Suryavanshi, Anupama Agnihotri and Govind Namdeo etc. The making of all my earlier films were always splendor and even today I have same thinking and has made this film on massive sets and big grandeur and the music of my this film is a another highlight which is going to be a delight for the audience.
