What is the character you are playing in the film?
I play a raw, edgy, intense character, always angry, an alcoholic surgeon who goes on a self destructive path after his ex-lover marries
someone else. He is a sort of modern Devdas. Or someone like Al Pacino in Scarface or Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver.
What made you do this film?
I saw the original South Telugu film Arjun Reddy directed by Sandeep Vanga and liked it and decided to do the film and I am sure it won’t
be a decision I will regret. It was great to work with a director like Sandeep Vanga.
Did you have to work on your character in any way?
Yes. Because I am nothing like the character of Kabir Singh in anyway. I am more easygoing and chilled out, so I went back to my college days when I had a few heartbreaks and relieved my angst by listening to old emotional songs and drowning myself in a few glasses of alcohol.I had to lose weight to play the college boy and for the groggy alcoholic look I grew a beard and toned my body too.
How was it like working with your co-star Kiara Advani?
It was great. She is a fantastic girl and a co-star, doesn’t have any airs and we gelled very well on the sets and on the screen. She plays
an important role in the film.
Did you have to make any changes for the Hindi version?
Yes. We had to set the film in Mumbai and Delhi and the dialogues were written keeping in mind these places rather than the Telugu version.
Tell us something about the music of the film.
The soundtrack is composed by Mithoon, Amaal Mallik, Vishal Mishra and Sachet-Parampara with lyrics written by Irshad Kamil and Mithoon and already the songs are a hit with the audiences.
Your brother Ishaan too has become a star.
Yes. I am happy for him. He has given two hits. Whenever he requires me I am there for him to give advice.
